The problem is that the `run &` command prints some things after the prompt: (gdb) [Thread debugging using libthread_db enabled] Using host libthread_db library "/usr/lib/../lib/libthread_db.so.1". If expect is quick enough, it will consume only up to the prompt. But if it is slow enough, it will consume those messages at the same time as the prompt, in which case the gdb_test used for "run &" won't match. By default, the prompt used by gdb_test uses a `$` to anchor the match at the end of the buffer. If there's anything following the prompt, it won't match. The diff above adds a delay between sending the command and consuming the output, giving GDB more time to output the messages, giving a good chance that expect consumes them at the same time as the prompt. This is normally handled by using gdb_test_multiple and specifying a pattern that ends with "$gdb_prompt", but not a trailing $. I think this is common enough that it deserves its own gdb_test option. Therefore, add the -no-anchor-prompt option to gdb_test, and gdb_test_no_output for completeness. README for GNU development tools This directory contains various GNU compilers, assemblers, linkers, debuggers, etc., plus their support routines, definitions, and documentation. If you are receiving this as part of a GDB release, see the file gdb/README. If with a binutils release, see binutils/README; if with a libg++ release, see libg++/README, etc. That'll give you info about this package -- supported targets, how to use it, how to report bugs, etc. It is now possible to automatically configure and build a variety of tools with one command. To build all of the tools contained herein, run the ``configure'' script here, e.g.: ./configure make To install them (by default in /usr/local/bin, /usr/local/lib, etc), then do: make install (If the configure script can't determine your type of computer, give it the name as an argument, for instance ``./configure sun4''. You can use the script ``config.sub'' to test whether a name is recognized; if it is, config.sub translates it to a triplet specifying CPU, vendor, and OS.) If you have more than one compiler on your system, it is often best to explicitly set CC in the environment before running configure, and to also set CC when running make.
