34166fc004 Bump Go version to v6
Tremendous amount of changes in here, but all should amount to
the same thing: changing Go import paths from v5 to v6.

Also bumped go.mod to github.com/containers/podman/v6 and updated
version to v6.0.0-dev.

74788a3fe1 fileperms: newer Go 1.13+ octal literal format
Problem: While removing cgroupsv1 code, I noticed my neovim Go config
automatically changed fileperms to the new octal format and I didn't
want that polluting my diffs.

Decision: I thought it best to switch to the new octal format in a dedicated PR.

Action:
- Cursor switched to new octal format for all fileperm ocurrences in Go
 source and test files.
- vendor/, docs/ and non-Go files were ignored.
- Reviewed manually.

68e7136536 Enforce wsl.exe UTF-8 encoded output
Currently WSL uses UTF-16 encoded output by default but is planning
to use UTF-8.

See https://github.com/containers/podman/issues/26527

To get ready for the change we are enforcing UTF-8 encoded output by
setting the environment variable `WSL_UTF8=1` and by updating the
code that transfomed wsl output from UTF-16 to UTF-8.

fix wsl install workflow on machine init command
2025-06-13 09:43:50 +00:00

8532ecb710 fix wsl install workflow on machine init command
this patch changes how the detection of wsl works.
The old way of using wsl --status command output to detect some missing features required by WSL is not fully reliable.
WSL checks if the wsl feature is enabled and if the vmcompute service do exist. However, this is not enough to identify if the virtual machine platform feature is enabled. The vmcompute service could exist because it has been installed by other tools or it could exist but being stopped.

The way proposed by this patch is to try execute the import command and,
if it fails, check the error and if it is related to the Host Compute
Service try to install all features required by WSL.

The flow is the same as before, the user is asked to execute the podman
machine init command with elevated privileges. Eventually, after
enabling WSL and VMP features, the user is asked to reboot the machine.

When the machine restarts, the powershell gets invoked again and execute
the command init.

The code also fixes some issues that could cause misbehaviors when
invoking recursively the elevated shell, like an unreleased lock, or a
missing file.

bd906cb314 pkg/machine/wsl: wrap command errors
First of some commands ignored cmd.Wait() error which means it was
impossible to notice any command errors. And others only returned
the wait error as it which when a command fails is just
`exit status <code>` which is not helpful at all.

This commit should add proper error wrapping with stderr to get useful
strings back hopefully.

f218f8430a machine: implement http proxy logic for all providers
Copy all proxy envs into the VM on each start, this allows for updates
without having to recrate the VM. This is implemented via shell script
that is passed via ssh to the VM after it is started.

With that we now use the same logic for all providers the old fw_cfg
logic for qemu has been removed and the WSL code as well which keeps the
behavior the same.

There is a small risk now because we only update the env via ssh that
processes started before will have the old incorrect env but it should
really only effect core system processes which likely do not need them
anyway. The podman system service should not be started at this point
so it should be good enough.

It also fixes the broken behavior with SSL_CERT_FILE/SSL_CERT_DIR which
were updated on each start which is not correct as the files are only
copied with ignition so these should not be updated and just set
statically when the VM was created.

e2e test has been added to ensure the behavior works as expected.

- API forwarding doesn't work on WSL
- Terminal corruption with after start/stop on Windows
- Gvproxy is forcefully killed vs gracefully quit
- Switching rootful/rootless does not update /var/run/docker.sock on the guest
- File already closed error on init
- HyperV backend is publishing Unix sockets when it should be named pipes
- User-mode networking doesn't always work
- Stop state outside of lock boundaries
- WSL blocks parallel machined (should be supported)

9bb191df51 [CI:MACHINE]Podman5 QEMU refactor
The following PR is the leading PR for refactoring podman machine with
the following goals:

* less duplication/more re-use
* common configuration file between providers
* more consistentency in how machines are handled by providers

The goal of this PR is the rough refactor. There are still rough spots
for sure, specifically around the podman socket and pipe. This
implemention is only for Linux. All other providers are still present
but will not compile or work. This is why tests for them have been
temporarily suspended.

The ready socket code is another area that needs to be smoothed over.
Right now, the ready socket code is still in QEMU. Preferably it would
be moved to a generic spot where all three approaches to readiness
socket use can be defined.

It should also be noted:

* all machine related tests pass.
* make validate for Linux passes
* Apple QEMU was largely removed
* More code pruning is possible; will become clearer when other
  providers are complete.

the dir pkg/machine/p5 is not permanent. i had to seperate this from
machine initially due to circular import problems. i think when all
providers are done (or nearly done), it can be placed and named
properly.

b9bcfa4749 podman5 machine reconfig 1
this is a logical place to get changes upstream before they grow out of
control. this pr is the first in an effort to deduplicate machine code
and streamline code flow.

a lot of code is simply moved to eliminate circular imports. names and
specific paths can ultimately be changed. i dont like some of the
descriptive interface names, etc. ultimately, i think once we have the
"old" code sanitized, we can re-use some of those.

clearly some of what is in here is temporary and will either be deleted,
changed, or moved again as this effort comes to a close.

right now, the machine code does not use any of the "new" code. you
will see in `init` and `rm` some commented out code that hooks it. i'm
afraid things will get worse before they get better (way worse).

b01a330d37 Use single persistent ssh key for all machines
Changes SSH key behavior such that there is a single persisted key for all
machines across all providers. If there is no key that is located at
`.local/share/containers/podman/machine/` then it is created. The keys are
not deleted when the last machine on the host is removed.

The main motivation for this change is it leads to fewer files created on the
host as a result of vm configuration. Having `n` machines on your system doesn't
result in `2n` machine-related files in `.ssh` on your system anymore.

As a result of ssh keys being persisted by default, the `--save-keys` flag
on `podman machine rm` will no longer be supported.

e5a4f00b7d Podman 5 machine config file - Step 1
The following PR is the very first step in what will a series of steps
to apply a "common" machine configuration file to all providers.
Function names, method names, struct names, and field names are all up
for debate. The purpose of this PR is to offer a glimpse at the
direction we intend to take.

This PR also contains temporary structs (i.e. aThing) that are not
exported. These are merely placeholders.

The configuration work in this PR is also unused of yet. But the code
is compiled. Once merged, we can begin the next step of development.

c23963d7a8 machine: qemu: add usb host passthrough
QEMU usb-host driver which is the one for passthrough, supports two
options for selecting an USB devices in the host to provide it to the
VM:
 - Bus and Device number the device is plugged
 - Vendor and Product information of the USB devices

    https://qemu-project.gitlab.io/qemu/system/devices/usb.html

This commit allows a user to configure podman machine with either of
options, with new --usb command line option for podman machine init.

Examples
podman machine init tosovm4 --usb vendor=13d3,product=5406
podman machine init tosovm3 --usb bus=1,devnum=4 --usb bus=1,devnum=3

This commit also allows a user to change the USBs configured with
--usb command line option for podman machine set.

Note that this commit does not handle host device permissions nor
