gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: fix leading space vs tabs issues
Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example, there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch. So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully). One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit" anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you already need a somewhat efficient way to do this. Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke. It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it). Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't really make archeology more difficult. The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy). gdb/ChangeLog: * aarch64-linux-tdep.c: Fix Use type_instance_flags more throughout
A later patch in this series will rewrite enum_flags fixing some API holes. That would cause build failures around code using type_instance_flags. Or rather, that should be using it, but wasn't. This patch fixes it by using type_instance_flags throughout instead of plain integers. Note that we can't make the seemingly obvious change to struct type::instance_flags: - unsigned instance_flags : 9; + ENUM_BITFIELD (type_instance_flag_value) instance_flags : 9; Because G++ complains then that 9 bits isn't sufficient for holding all values of type_instance_flag_value. So the patch adds an type::instance_flags() method, which takes care of casting appropriately, and adds a separate type::set_instance_flags method, following the pattern of the ongoing TYPE_XXX macro elimination. This converts uses of TYPE_INSTANCE_FLAGS to type::instance_flags() in the places where the code was already being touched, but there are still many references to the TYPE_INSTANCE_FLAGS macro left behind. Those could/should be fully replaced at some point. gdb/ChangeLog: * avr-tdep.c (avr_address_class_type_flags): Return type_instance_flags. Remove obsolete gdbarch_static_transform_name
gdbarch_static_transform_name is completely Solaris-specific or rather specific to the Studio compilers. Studio cc has deprecated Stabs support in the 12.4 release back in 2015, GCC has defaulted to DWARF-2 on Solaris 7+ since 2004 and Stabs themselves are pretty much obsolete, so the whole code can go. Tested on sparcv9-sun-solaris2.11 and x86_64-pc-linux-gnu with --enable-targets=all. * sol2-tdep.c (sol2_static_transform_name): Remove. gdb: add field::type / field::set_type

In this patch, the `FIELD_TYPE` macro is changed to use `field::type`, so all the call sites that are useused to set the field's type are changed to use `field::set_type`. The next patch will remove `FIELD_TYPE` completely. Note that because of the name clash between the existing field named `type` and the new method, I renamed the field `m_type`. It is not private per-se, because we can't make `struct field` a non-POD yet, but it should be considered private anyway (not accessed outside `struct field`). gdb/ChangeLog: * gdbtypes.h (struct field) <type, set_type>: New methods. gdb: remove TYPE_FIELD macro
Replace all uses of it by type::field. Note that since type::field returns a reference to the field, some spots are used to assign the whole field structure. See ctfread.c, function attach_fields_to_type, for example. This is the same as was happening with the macro, so I don't think it's a problem, but if anybody sees a really nicer way to do this, now could be a good time to implement it. gdb/ChangeLog: * gdbtypes.h (TYPE_FIELD): Remove. Speed up psymbol reading by removing a copy
I noticed that cp_canonicalize_string and friends copy a unique_xmalloc_ptr to a std::string. However, this copy isn't genuinely needed anywhere, and it serves to slow down DWARF psymbol reading. gdb: add back declarations for _initialize functions
I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning. However, it warns for every _initialize function, for example: CXX dcache.o /home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c: In function ‘void _initialize_dcache()’: /home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c:688:1: error: no previous declaration for ‘void _initialize_dcache()’ [-Werror=missing-declarations] _initialize_dcache (void) ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The only practical way forward I found is to add back the declarations, which were removed by this commit: commit 481695ed5f6e0a8a9c9c50bfac1cdd2b3151e6c9 Author: John Baldwin <jhb@FreeBSD.org> Date: Sat Sep 9 11:02:37 2017 -0700 Remove unnecessary function prototypes. Make symbol_set_names a member function
This also renames it to make it clearer that this is not a cheap function (to compute_and_set_names). Also renames name to m_name to make the implementation of the renamed function more readable. Most of the places that access sym->m_name directly were also changed to call linkage_name () instead, to make it clearer which name they are accessing. gdb/ChangeLog: 2019-12-26 Christian Biesinger <cbiesinger@google.com> * ada-lang.c (ada_decode_symbol): Update. * buildsym.c (add_symbol_to_list): Update. * coffread.c (process_coff_symbol): Update. * ctfread.c (ctf_add_enum_member_cb): Update. Use a member function to set a symbol's language
This removes symbol_set_language and SYMBOL_SET_LANGUAGE in favor of a new function general_symbol_info::set_language. symbol and minimal_symbol already inherit from that struct so this works naturally. gdb/ChangeLog: 2019-12-15 Christian Biesinger <cbiesinger@google.com> * ada-exp.y (write_ambiguous_var): Update. * coffread.c (process_coff_symbol): Update. * ctfread.c (ctf_add_enum_member_cb): Update. Use an accessor function for general_symbol_info::language
Also renames the member variable to m_language to make code easier to read when more functions become member functions. I was originally hoping to eventually make m_language private (after a few more patches), but unfortunately then it no longer counts as a POD type, which means gdbsupport/poison.h won't let us use memset to initialize this type, which psymtabs rely on to clear padding bytes so that bcache can work properly. gdb/ChangeLog: 2019-12-15 Christian Biesinger <cbiesinger@google.com> * ada-lang.c (ada_add_block_symbols): Update. Change some arguments to gdb::string_view instead of name+len
Just some code cleanup. This change has a few benefits: - Shorter argument list in the functions - If the caller needs to calculate the string, they no longer need to explicitly call strlen - It is easy to pass std::string to this (done in one place currently) This also updates a couple of places that were passing 0/1 to a bool parameter. gdb/ChangeLog: 2019-10-29 Christian Biesinger <cbiesinger@google.com> * coffread.c (record_minimal_symbol): Update. Move declaration of vtbl_ptr_name to the header.
There are conflicting comments about whether this was introduced in GCC 2.4.5 or GCC 2.6 and I don't know which one is correct... gdb/ChangeLog: 2019-10-07 Christian Biesinger <cbiesinger@google.com> * c-lang.h (vtbl_ptr_name): Declare. * cp-valprint.c (vtbl_ptr_name): Remove "extern" now that we get it from the header. * stabsread.c (define_symbol): Remove declaration of vtbl_ptr_name. |

Change SYMBOL_VALUE_ADDRESS to be an rvalue
This changes SYMBOL_VALUE_ADDRESS to be an rvalue. The symbol readers generally assign using this, so this also introduces SET_SYMBOL_VALUE_ADDRESS and updates the readers. Making this change is useful in a subsequent patch, which redefined SYMBOL_VALUE_ADDRESS. gdb/ChangeLog 2019-10-02 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * coffread.c (process_coff_symbol): Update. * dwarf2read.c (var_decode_location, new_symbol): Update. * mdebugread.c (parse_symbol): Update. * objfiles.c (relocate_one_symbol): Update. * stabsread.c (define_symbol, fix_common_block) (scan_file_globals): Update. * symtab.h (SYMBOL_VALUE_ADDRESS): Expand to an rvalue. Introduce obstack_strndup
This introduces obstack_strndup and changes gdb to use it. Note that obstack_strndup works like savestring, and not exactly like xstrndup. The difference is that obstack_strndup uses the passed-in length, while xstrndup uses strnlen to choose the length. gdb/ChangeLog 2019-08-06 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com> * stabsread.c (patch_block_stabs, read_one_struct_field) (read_enum_type): Use obstack_strndup. * rust-exp.y (rust_parser::copy_name): Use obstack_strndup. * gdb_obstack.h (obstack_strndup): Use obstack_strndup. * dwarf2read.c (guess_full_die_structure_name) (anonymous_struct_prefix): Use obstack_strndup. * dbxread.c (cp_set_block_scope): Use obstack_strndup. * c-exp.y (yylex): Use obstack_strndup. * ada-exp.y (write_object_renaming, write_ambiguous_var) (write_var_or_type): Use obstack_strndup. |

Remove unnecessary casts of NULL
I noticed some unnecessary casts of NULL. This removes all the unnecessary ones, leaving only ones where we must ensure that NULL has pointer type for passing through varargs. C++-ify bcache
This somewhat C++-ifies bcache. It replaces bcache_xmalloc and bcache_xfree with constructors; changes some functions into methods; and changes various structures to include a bcache directly (as opposed to a pointer to a bcache). Tested by the buildbot. gdb/ChangeLog 2019-03-07 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com> * symmisc.c (print_symbol_bcache_statistics): Update. Remove last cleanups from stabsread.c
This removes the last cleanups from stabsread.c. Similar code in dwarf2read.c was C++-ified, but considering that stabs are deprecated, it seemed simpler to just change these allocations to use an obstack and leave the data structures in place. This patch renames field_info to stabs_field_info -- adding a constructor here provoked a bug due to the resulting ODR violation. 2019-03-06 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com> * stabsread.c (struct stabs_field_info): Rename from field_info. <list, fnlist>: Add initializers. <obstack>: New member. (read_member_functions, read_struct_fields, read_baseclasses): Allocate on obstack. Don't use cleanups. (read_one_struct_field, read_member_functions, read_struct_fields) (read_baseclasses, read_tilde_fields, attach_fn_fields_to_type) (attach_fields_to_type, read_cpp_abbrev, read_member_functions) (read_struct_type): Update. |
