a357defdfe Lock bfd_stat and bfd_get_mtime
PR gdb/31713 points out some races when using the background DWARF
reader.

This particular patch fixes some of these, namely the ones when using
the sim. In this case, the 'load' command calls reopen_exec_file,
which calls bfd_stat, which introduces a race.

BFD only locks globals -- concurrent use of a single BFD must be
handled by the application. To this end, this patch adds locked
wrappers for bfd_stat and bfd_get_mtime.

I couldn't reproduce these data races but the original reporter tested
the patch and confirms that it helps.

4144d36a68 gdb: add program_space parameter to lookup_minimal_symbol
>From what I can see, lookup_minimal_symbol doesn't have any dependencies
on the global current state other than the single reference to
current_program_space. Add a program_space parameter and make that
current_program_space reference bubble up one level.

c8979ae4fb gdb: make lookup_minimal_symbol objf and sfile parameters optional
Most calls to lookup_minimal_symbol don't pass a value for sfile and
objf. Make these parameters optional (have a default value of
nullptr). And since passing a value to `objf` is much more common than
passing a value to `sfile`, swap the order so `objf` comes first, to
avoid having to pass a nullptr value to `sfile` when wanting to pass a
value to `objf`.

5b9707eb87 gdb: remove gdbcmd.h
Most files including gdbcmd.h currently rely on it to access things
actually declared in cli/cli-cmds.h (setlist, showlist, etc). To make
things easy, replace all includes of gdbcmd.h with includes of
cli/cli-cmds.h. This might lead to some unused includes of
cli/cli-cmds.h, but it's harmless, and much faster than going through
the 170 or so files by hand.

18d2988e5d gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: remove includes of early headers
Now that defs.h, server.h and common-defs.h are included via the
`-include` option, it is no longer necessary for source files to include
them. Remove all the inclusions of these files I could find. Update
the generation scripts where relevant.

1d506c26d9 Update copyright year range in header of all files managed by GDB
This commit is the result of the following actions:

  - Running gdb/copyright.py to update all of the copyright headers to
    include 2024,

  - Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to
    update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the
    file,

  - Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright
    date,

  - Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023. If
    these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've
    updated them this year to 2024.

I'm sure I've probably missed some dates. Feel free to fix them up as
you spot them.

aecbdf5f34 Simplify the public DWARF API
dwarf2_has_info and dwarf2_initialize_objfile are only separate
because the DWARF reader implemented lazy psymtab reading. However,
now that this is gone, we can simplify the public DWARF API again.

d182e39881 Use C++17 [[fallthrough]] attribute
This changes gdb to use the C++17 [[fallthrough]] attribute rather
than special comments.

This was mostly done by script, but I neglected a few spellings and so
also fixed it up by hand.

I suspect this fixes the bug mentioned below, by switching to a
standard approach that, presumably, clang supports.

0e3513d256 gdb: bfd_get_symbol_leading_char vs. ""
Some places matching the first char of a string against
bfd_get_symbol_leading_char, which may be zero, didn't check for "".
This could lead to accesses past the end of the string and potential
buffer overruns. Fix that, and also get rid of a stupid optimisation
in dbxread when looking for "__DYNAMIC" that also might access past
the end of a string.

0ecf440316 Consolidate calls to bfd_set_cacheable
I noticed that some spots in gdb call bfd_set_cacheable after opening
a BFD.

The BFD file cache is a bit odd. BFDs that are opened locally are
unconditionally registered with the cache, and their underlying file
descriptor will always be closed when bfd_cache_close_all is called.
However, only "cacheable" BFDs will be eligible for reopening when
needed -- and by default BFD decides that if a file descriptor is
passed in, then it should not be cacheable. If a non-cacheable BFD's
file descriptor is closed, there is no offical way to reopen it.

gdb needs to call bfd_cache_close_all, because some systems cannot
start an executable when it has an open file descriptor referencing
it.

However, gdb also will sometimes passes an open file descriptor to the
various BFD open functions. And, due to lazy DWARF reading, gdb may
also need to reopen these BFDs.

Rather than having all the callers figure out when exactly to set the
cacheable flag, I think it makes sense to consolidate this logic into
the gdb_bfd.c wrapper functions. It is ok to do this because gdb
always passes a filename to these open functions, so reopening should
work ok.

Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 38.

98badbfdc2 Use gdb_bfd_ref_ptr in objfile
This changes struct objfile to use a gdb_bfd_ref_ptr. In addition to
removing some manual memory management, this fixes a use-after-free
that was introduced by the registry rewrite series. The issue there
was that, in some cases, registry shutdown could refer to memory that
had already been freed. This help fix the bug by delaying the
destruction of the BFD reference (and thus the per-bfd object) until
after the registry has been shut down.

31de881f8f Always use dwarf2_initialize_objfile
Internally we noticed that some tests would fail like so on Windows:

warning: Section .debug_aranges in [...] has duplicate debug_info_offset 0x0, ignoring .debug_aranges.

Debugging showed that, in fact, a second CU was being created at this
offset. We tracked this down to the fact that, while the ELF reader
is careful to re-use the per-BFD data, other readers are not, and
could re-read the DWARF data multiple times.

However, since the change to allow an objfile to have multiple "quick
symbol" implementations, there's no reason for this approach -- it's
safe and easy for all symbol readers to reuse the per-BFD data when
reading DWARF.

This patch implements this idea, simplifying dwarf2_build_psymtabs and
making it private, and then switching to dwarf2_initialize_objfile as
the sole way to start the DWARF reader.

Note that, while I think the call to dwarf2_build_frame_info in
machoread.c is also obsolete, I haven't attempted to remove it here.

The section being dealt with at that moment is the special *COM*
section:

    (top-gdb) p section.name
    $1 = 0x55555a1bbe60 "*COM*"
    (top-gdb) p section
    $2 = (bfd_section *) 0x55555bbe4ac0 <_bfd_std_section>

I'm not too sure what this section is for, but this is one of four
special BFD sections that GDB puts after the regular sections in the
objfile::sections and objfile::section_offsets lists. You can check
gdb_bfd_section_index to see how they are handled.
gdb_bfd_count_sections returns "+ 4" to account for those sections.

The problem is that macho_symfile_offsets uses bfd_count_sections
instead of gdb_bfd_count_sections when allocating the
objfile::section_offsets vector. The vector will therefore contain,
say, 13 elements instead of 17. When trying to access the section
offset of the *COM* section, the first after the regular sections, we
access section_offsets[13], which is out of bounds.

Fix that by using gdb_bfd_count_sections instead of bfd_count_sections.
I'm fairly confident that this is correct, as this is what
default_symfile_offsets does.

With this patch, the command shown above terminates normally:

    $ ./gdb -nx --data-directory=data-directory -q repro/test -ex "b main" -batch
    Breakpoint 1 at 0x100003fad: file test.c, line 2.

0c1bcd2327 gdb: convert obj_section macros to methods
Convert these three macros to methods of obj_section. The problem fixed
by the following patch is caused by an out of bound access of the
objfile::section_offsets vector. Since this is deep in macros, we don't
get a clear backtrace and it's difficult to debug. Changing that to
methods means we can step in them and break on them.

Because their implementation requires knowing about struct objfile, move
struct obj_section below struct objfile in objfiles.h.

The obj_section_offset was used in one place as an lvalue to set
offsets, in machoread.c. Replace that with a set_offset method.

Add the objfile::section_offset and objfile::set_section_offset methods
to improve encapsulation (reduce other objects poking into struct
objfile's internals).

gdb/ChangeLog:

	* objfiles.h (struct obj_section): Move down.
	<offset, set_offset, addr, endaddr>: New.
	(obj_section_offset, obj_section_addr, obj_section_endaddr),
	replace all users to use obj_section methods.
	(struct objfile) <section_offset, set_section_offset>: New.

eb00e4686d Remove sym_fns::sym_read_psymbols
Partial symbols are read via the sym_fns::sym_read_psymbols function
pointer. In order to separate the partial symbols from the objfile,
this must instead be done via a virtual method on

5c3f1e5bfc Move sym_fns::qf to objfile
Currently the "partial" symbol reader is attached to the objfile's
symbol functions. However, in order to allow multiple separate
partial symbol readers, this association must be changed. This patch
moves the "qf" member out of sym_fns as a step toward that goal.

dda83cd783 gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: fix leading space vs tabs issues
Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example,
there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward
when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong
indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also
wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same
patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch.

So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully).

One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology
more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last
change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when
git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit"
anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are
interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you
already need a somewhat efficient way to do this.

Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this
trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past
the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke.
It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it).
Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't
really make archeology more difficult.

The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with
existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those
are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git
rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will
re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing
the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy).

08feed99cb Change get_objfile_arch to a method on objfile
This changes get_objfile_arch to be a new inline method,
objfile::arch.

To my surprise, this function came up while profiling DWARF psymbol
reading. Making this change improved performance from 1.986 seconds
to 1.869 seconds. Both measurements were done by taking the mean of
10 runs on a fixed copy of the gdb executable.

Simon Marchi
6c2659886f gdb: add back declarations for _initialize functions
I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning. However, it
warns for every _initialize function, for example:

      CXX    dcache.o
    /home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c: In function ‘void _initialize_dcache()’:
    /home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c:688:1: error: no previous declaration for ‘void _initialize_dcache()’ [-Werror=missing-declarations]
     _initialize_dcache (void)
     ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The only practical way forward I found is to add back the declarations,
which were removed by this commit:

    commit 481695ed5f
    Author: John Baldwin <jhb@FreeBSD.org>
    Date:   Sat Sep 9 11:02:37 2017 -0700

        Remove unnecessary function prototypes.

I don't think it's a big problem to have the declarations for these
functions, but if anybody has a better solution for this, I'll be happy
to use it.

6a053cb1ff Change section_offsets to a std::vector
This changes section_offsets to be specialization of a std::vector and
updates all the users. It also removes the ANOFFSET and
SIZEOF_N_SECTION_OFFSETS macros.

Most of this is just a generic sort of cleanup, that reduces the
number of lines of code. However, a couple spots were doing weird
things.

objfile_relocate did:

-      std::vector<struct section_offsets>
-	new_debug_offsets (SIZEOF_N_SECTION_OFFSETS (debug_objfile->num_sections));

... which seems to greatly over-estimate the number of elements
needed.

This appeared in set_objfile_default_section_offset:

-  std::vector<struct section_offsets> offsets (objf->num_sections,
-					       { { offset } });

... which makes sense due to type safety, but is also actively
confusing given that section_offsets was previously also a kind of
vector type.

Tested on x86-64 Fedora 30.

0dc327459b gdb: Remove vec.{c,h} and update code to not include vec.h
Removes vec.c and vec.h from the source tree, and remove all the
remaining includes of vec.h. There should be no user visible changes
after this commit.

I did have a few issues rebuilding GDB after applying this patch due
to cached dependencies, I found that running this command in the build
directory resolved my build issues without requiring a 'make clean':

    rm -fr gdb/gdbserver/gdbsupport/.deps/

fd3619828e bfd_section_* macros
This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various
bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if
needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can
be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind
std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified
anyway.

The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros,
replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds
bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where
compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling
bfd_rename_section. This would have broken bfd_get_section_by_name
and similar functions, but that hardly mattered at such a late stage
in gas processing.

bfd/
	* bfd-in.h (bfd_get_section_name, bfd_get_section_vma),
	(bfd_get_section_lma, bfd_get_section_alignment),
	(bfd_get_section_size, bfd_get_section_flags),
	(bfd_get_section_userdata): Delete.
	(bfd_section_name, bfd_section_size, bfd_section_vma),
	(bfd_section_lma, bfd_section_alignment): Lose bfd parameter.
	(bfd_section_flags, bfd_section_userdata): New.
	(bfd_is_com_section): Rename parameter.
	* section.c (bfd_set_section_userdata, bfd_set_section_vma),
	(bfd_set_section_alignment, bfd_set_section_flags, bfd_rename_section),
	(bfd_set_section_size): Delete bfd parameter, rename section parameter.
	(bfd_set_section_lma): New.
	* bfd-in2.h: Regenerate.
	* mach-o.c (bfd_mach_o_init_section_from_mach_o): Delete bfd param,

268a13a5a3 Rename common to gdbsupport
This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the
top level.

This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do
this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then
move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit
more tractable.

I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this
patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too
much difficulty.

Tested by the buildbot.

42a4f53d2b Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.

Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.

gdb/ChangeLog:

	Update copyright year range in all GDB files.

b926417afa Simple -Wshadow=local fixes
This fixes all the straightforward -Wshadow=local warnings in gdb. A
few standard approaches are used here:

* Renaming an inner (or outer, but more commonly inner) variable;
* Lowering a declaration to avoid a clash;
* Moving a declaration into a more inner scope to avoid a clash,
  including the special case of moving a declaration into a loop header.

I did not consider any of the changes in this patch to be particularly
noteworthy, though of course they should all still be examined.

gdb/ChangeLog
2018-10-04  Tom Tromey  <tom@tromey.com>

	* ctf.c (SET_ARRAY_FIELD): Rename "u32".
	* p-valprint.c (pascal_val_print): Split inner "i" variable.

12a0d0f661 Darwin: fix bad loop incrementation
When reading symbols from the vector of oso files on Mac OS X
Darwin, a previous commit introduce a change in the loop and add
an increment at each loop iteration whereas this incrementation is
not needed since the increment or set of the loop control variable
is already done in the loop.

gdb/ChangeLog:

	* machoread.c (macho_symfile_read_all_oso): Remove uneeded
	incrementation.

6317728958 Fix crash in machoread.c
"./gdb ./gdb" was crashing for me on macOS. Investigating showed that
macho_symfile_read was crashing because "symbol_table" was being freed
too soon. This was introduced by my earlier patch to change
macho_symfile_read to use a std::vector.

Tested on macOS 10.13.5 using "./gdb ./gdb". This should un-break
various already existing tests (testsuite/gdb.gdb at least), so no new
test case.

I'm checking this in as obvious.

gdb/ChangeLog
2018-06-27  Tom Tromey  <tom@tromey.com>

	* machoread.c (macho_symfile_read): Define "symbol_table" earlier.

b98664d386 Remove symfile_complaints
The complaint system seems to allow for multiple different complaint
topics. However, in practice only symfile_complaints has ever been
defined. Seeing that complaints.c dates to 1992, and that no new
complaints have been added in the intervening years, I think it is
reasonable to admit that complaints are specifically related to
debuginfo reading.

This patch removes symfile_complaints and updates all the callers.
Some of these spots should perhaps be calls to warning instead, but I
did not make that change.
