Add support for printing value of DWARF-based fixed-point type objects
This commit introduces a new kind of type, meant to describe fixed-point types, using a new code added specifically for this purpose (TYPE_CODE_FIXED_POINT). It then adds handling of fixed-point base types in the DWARF reader. And finally, as a first step, this commit adds support for printing the value of fixed-point type objects. Note that this commit has a known issue: Trying to print the value of a fixed-point object with a format letter (e.g. "print /x NAME") causes the wrong value to be printed because the scaling factor is not applied. Since the fix for this issue is isolated, and this is not a regression, the fix will be made in a pach of its own. This is meant to simplify review and archeology. Also, other functionalities related to fixed-point type handling (ptype, arithmetics, etc), will be added piecemeal as well, for the same reasons (faciliate reviews and archeology). Related to this, the testcase gdb.ada/fixed_cmp.exp is adjusted to compile the test program with -fgnat-encodings=all, so as to force the use of GNAT encodings, rather than rely on the compiler's default to use them. The intent is to enhance this testcase to also test the pure DWARF approach using -fgnat-encodings=minimal as soon as the corresponding suport gets added in. gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: fix leading space vs tabs issues
Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example, there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch. So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully). One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit" anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you already need a somewhat efficient way to do this. Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke. It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it). Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't really make archeology more difficult. The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy). gdb/ChangeLog: * aarch64-linux-tdep.c: Fix gdb: remove LA_PRINT_ARRAY_INDEX macro
Replace the single use of the LA_PRINT_ARRAY_INDEX macro with the macro's definition, and delete the macro. gdb: remove LA_VALUE_PRINT macro
Remove the LA_VALUE_PRINT macro, and replace its uses with direct calls to the value_print member function on an appropriate language. In the global 'value_print' function, we call the value_print method on the current_language, this is a direct inline replacement of the old LA_VALUE_PRINT macro. However, in ada-lang.c, and language.c the macro was being used within the print_array_index member function of a language class. In these cases we now call the value_print member function of the current language class. In theory, when we are inside (for example) the ada_language::print_array_index function the current_language should always be set to Ada, so this change should have no effect. However, if we ever could get into ada_language::print_array_index with the current language set to something else (which I think would have been a bug) then we would now see a change in behaviour. I couldn't find any cases where this happened though. Make range types inherit signed-ness from base type
I ran across this comment in valprint.c: /* FIXME: create_static_range_type does not set the unsigned bit in a range type (I think it probably should copy it from the target type), so we won't print values which are too large to fit in a signed integer correctly. */ It seems to me that a range type ought to inherit its signed-ness from the underlying type, so this patch implements this change, and removes the comment. (It was also copied into m2-valprint.c.) Handle member pointers directly in generic_value_print
TYPE_CODE_MEMBERPTR and TYPE_CODE_METHODPTR are only used for C++, so it seems to me that the generic value-printing code ought to handle these cases -- that way, printing these objects will work even when the current language is not C++. Handle indexing Ada arrays with enum indices
In Ada, like C, an enum can assign values to the constants. However, unlike C (or any other language supported by gdb), the enum type can also be used as the range of an array. In this case, the user's code references the enum constants, but the compiler translates these to the position of the constant in the enum. So for example one might write: type Enum_With_Gaps is ( LIT0, LIT1, LIT2, LIT3, LIT4 ); for Enum_With_Gaps use ( LIT0 => 3, LIT1 => 5, LIT2 => 8, LIT3 => 13, LIT4 => 21 ); Then index an array like "array(LIT3)" -- but this will be the 4th element in an array of 5 elements, not the 13th element in an array of 19 (assuming I did the math right) elements. gdb supports this to some degree, with the only missing piece being indexing into such an array. This patch implements this missing feature, and also fixes an existing bug, which is that in some situations I believe gdb would mis-compute the resulting array's length. The approach taken here is to try to integrate this feature into the core of gdb. My view is that much of the Ada support should be better integrated with gdb, rather than being "on the side". This, I think, would help avoid code duplication at least. So, I try to take steps toward this goal when possible. Because other languages generally don't allow the user to specify the index type of an array, I simply made the core of gdb unconditionally apply discrete_position when computing the range of such an array. Replace most calls to help_list and cmd_show_list
Currently there are many prefix commands that do nothing but call either help_list or cmd_show_list. I happened to notice that one such call, for "set print type", used the wrong command list parameter, causing incorrect output. Rather than fix this bug in isolation, I decided to eliminate this possibility by adding two new ways to add prefix commands, which simply route the call to help_list or cmd_show_list, as appropriate. This makes it impossible for a mismatch to occur. In some cases, a bit of output was removed; however, I don't think this output in general was very useful. It seemed redundant with what's already printed by help_list. A representative example is this hunk, removed from ada-lang.c: - printf_unfiltered (_(\ -"\"set ada\" must be followed by the name of a setting.\n")); This simplified the CLI style set/show commands quite a bit, and allowed the deletion of a macro. This also cleans up some unusual code in windows-tdep.c. Tested on x86-64 Fedora 30. Change extension language pretty-printers to use value API
This changes the extension language pretty-printers to use the value API. Note that new functions were needed, for both Guile and Python. Currently both languages always wrap values by removing the values from the value chain. This makes sense to avoid strange behavior with watchpoints, and to avoid excessive memory use. Introduce common_val_print_checked
A (much) later patch will remove the call to value_check_printable from common_val_print. This will needed to preserve some details of how optimized-out structures are printed. However, doing this will also break dw2-op-out-param.exp. Making the change causes "bt" to print: However, the test wants to see: ... operand2=<optimized out> That is, a wholly-optimized out structure should not print its fields. So, this patch introduces a new common_val_print_checked, which calls value_check_printable first, and then arranges to use it in the one spot that affects the test suite. I was not completely sure if it would be preferable to change the test. However, I reasoned that, assuming this output was intentional in the first place, in a backtrace space is at a premium and so this is a reasonable approach. If a flag enum has value 0 and the enumeration type does not have an enumerator with value 0, we currently print: $1 = (unknown: 0x0) I don't like the display of "unknown" here, since for flags, 0 is a an expected value. It just means that no flags are set. I have come across some uses cases where it would be desirable to treat an enum that has duplicate values as a "flag enum". gdb: fix printing of flag enums with multi-bit enumerators
GDB has this feature where if an enum looks like it is meant to represent binary flags, it will present the values of that type as a bitwise OR of the flags that are set in the value. The original motivation for this patch is to fix this behavior: enum hello { AAA = 0x1, BBB = 0xf0 }; (gdb) p (enum hello) 0x11 $1 = (AAA | BBB) This is wrong because the bits set in BBB (0xf0) are not all set in the value 0x11, but GDB presents it as if they all were. I think that enumerations with enumerators that have more than one bit set should simply not qualify as "flag enum", as far as this heuristic is concerned. I'm not sure what it means to have flags of more than one bit. So this is what this patch implements. I have added an assert in generic_val_print_enum_1 to make sure the flag enum types respect that, in case they are used by other debug info readers, in the future. I've enhanced the gdb.base/printcmds.exp test to cover this case. Implement 'print -raw-values' and 'set print raw-values on|off'
The option framework documentation was speaking about a 'print -raw' option, but this option does not exist. This patch implements -raw-values option that tells to ignore the active pretty printers when printing a value. Use metadata style in a few more places
I happened to find a few more spots that should use metadata style, but do not. I missed these in my earlier search somehow.
