Disable ptype/o for dynamic types
A user pointed out that "ptype/o" of a certain Ada type -- while in C mode -- caused gdb to crash. The bug here is that dynamic types can't really be printed this way. This patch avoids the bug by disabling the "/o" feature in this case. Note that using "ptype/o" in this way makes sense for the time being, because the Ada code doesn't support the "/o" feature (yet); and in any case gdb should not crash. |

Allow 'ptype/o' for assembly
PR exp/28359 points out that 'ptype/o' does not work when the current language is "asm". I tracked this down to a hard-coded list of languages in typeprint.c. This patch replaces this list with a method on 'language_defn' instead. If all languages are ever updated to have this feature, the method could be removed; but in the meantime this lets each language control what happens. I looked at having each print_type method simply modify the flags itself, but this doesn't work very well with the feature that disables method-printing by default (but allows it via a flag). gdb: Use a typedef's scoped type name to identify local typedefs
GDB prints the wrong type for typedefs in case there is another typedef
available for the same raw type (gdb/16040). The reason is that the
current hashmap based substitution mechanism always compares the target
type of a typedef and not its scoped name.

gdb: add string_file::release method
A common pattern for string_file is to want to move out the internal string buffer, because it is the result of the computation that we want to return. It is the reason why string_file::string returns a non-const reference, as explained in the comment. I think it would make sense to have a dedicated method for that instead and make string_file::string return a const reference. This allows removing the explicit std::move in the typical case. Note that compile_program::compute was missing a move, meaning that the resulting string was copied. With the new version, it's not possible to forget to move. Reduce explicit use of gdb_stdout
In an earlier version of the pager rewrite series, it was important to audit unfiltered output calls to see which were truly necessary. This is no longer necessary, but it still seems like a decent cleanup to change calls to avoid explicitly passing gdb_stdout. That is, rather than using something like fprintf_unfiltered with gdb_stdout, the code ought to use plain printf_unfiltered instead. This patch makes this change. I went ahead and converted all the _filtered calls I could find, as well, for the same clarity. |

Change pointer_type to a method of struct type
I noticed that pointer_type is declared in language.h and defined in language.c. However, it really has to do with types, so it should have been in gdbtypes.h all along. This patch changes it to be a method on struct type. And, I went through uses of TYPE_IS_REFERENCE and updated many spots to use the new method as well. (I didn't update ones that were in arch-specific code, as I couldn't readily test that.) |

gdb: generate the prefix name for prefix commands on demand
Previously, the prefixname field of struct cmd_list_element was manually set for prefix commands. This seems verbose and error prone as it required every single call to functions adding prefix commands to specify the prefix name while the same information can be easily generated. Historically, this was not possible as the prefix field was null for many commands, but this was fixed in commit 3f4d92ebdf7f848b5ccc9e8d8e8514c64fde1183 by Philippe Waroquiers, so we can rely on the prefix field being set when generating the prefix name. This commit also fixes a use after free in this scenario: * A command gets created via Python (using the gdb.Command class). The prefix name member is dynamically allocated. * An alias to the new command is created. The alias's prefixname is set to point to the prefixname for the original command with a direct assignment. * A new command with the same name as the Python command is created. * The object for the original Python command gets freed and its prefixname gets freed as well. * The alias is updated to point to the new command, but its prefixname is not updated so it keeps pointing to the freed one. gdb/ChangeLog: * command.h (add_prefix_cmd): Remove the prefixname argument as it can now be generated automatically. [PR gdb/22640] ptype: add option to use hexadecimal notation
This commit adds a flag to the ptype command in order to print the
offsets and sizes of struct members using the hexadecimal notation. The
'x' flag ensures use of the hexadecimal notation while the 'd' flag
ensures use of the decimal notation. The default is to use decimal
notation.
Before this patch, gdb only uses decimal notation, as pointed out in PR
gdb/22640.
Here is an example of this new behavior with hex output turned on:

This patch also adds the 'set print type hex' and 'show print type hex'
commands in order to set and inspect the default behavior regarding the
use of decimal or hexadecimal notation when printing struct sizes and
offsets.
Tested using on x86_64.

Do not manually dissect OP_TYPE operations
Some code in GDB will examine the structure of an expression to see if it starts with OP_TYPE, and then proceed to extract the type by hand. There is no need to do this dissection manually. evaluate_type does the same thing via an "allowed" API. This patch changes such code to use evaluate_type. In two cases this simplifies the code. Add TYPE_CODE_FIXED_POINT handling in print_type_scalar
This commit enhances print_type_scalar to include support for
TYPE_CODE_FIXED_POINT. This way, any language falling back to
this function for printing the description of some types
also gets basic ptype support for fixed point types as well.
This fixes a couple of XFAILs in gdb.dwarf2/dw2-fixed-point.exp.

change and rename gmp_string_asprintf to return an std::string
This was suggested by Simon during a code review of this package upstream.
The upside is that this makes the function's API more natural and C++.
The downside is an extra malloc, which might be the reason why we went
for using a unique_xmalloc_ptr in the first place. Since this function
is not expected to be called frequently, the API improvement might be
worth the performance impact.

Add ptype support for DWARF-based fixed-point types
Note that the ptype information printed for types described
via pure DWARF debug info is slightly less informative as
the one printed when the information is encoded in the type's
name, via the GNAT encoding. As a result, the output in
the case of DWARF-described fixed point types is slightly
different. In pratice, this is no real loss because the information
not available in DWARF has no bearing on how the type is actually
stored in memory.

gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: fix leading space vs tabs issues
Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example, there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch. So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully). One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit" anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you already need a somewhat efficient way to do this. Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke. It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it). Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't really make archeology more difficult. The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy). gdb/ChangeLog: * aarch64-linux-tdep.c: Fix Replace most calls to help_list and cmd_show_list
Currently there are many prefix commands that do nothing but call either help_list or cmd_show_list. I happened to notice that one such call, for "set print type", used the wrong command list parameter, causing incorrect output. Rather than fix this bug in isolation, I decided to eliminate this possibility by adding two new ways to add prefix commands, which simply route the call to help_list or cmd_show_list, as appropriate. This makes it impossible for a mismatch to occur. In some cases, a bit of output was removed; however, I don't think this output in general was very useful. It seemed redundant with what's already printed by help_list. A representative example is this hunk, removed from ada-lang.c: - printf_unfiltered (_(\ -"\"set ada\" must be followed by the name of a setting.\n")); This simplified the CLI style set/show commands quite a bit, and allowed the deletion of a macro. This also cleans up some unusual code in windows-tdep.c. Tested on x86-64 Fedora 30. gdb: add back declarations for _initialize functions
I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning. However, it
warns for every _initialize function, for example:

The only practical way forward I found is to add back the declarations,

Remove unnecessary function prototypes.

Introduce metadata style
This introduces a new "metadata" style and changes many places in gdb to use it. The idea here is to let the user distinguish gdb output from output that (conceptually at least) comes directly from the inferior. The newly-styled category includes text that gdb traditionally surrounds in "<...>", like "<unavailable>". I only added a single test for this. In many cases this output is difficult to test. Remove trailing newlines from help text
I noticed recently that some command had a trailing newline in its "help" output. So, I temporarily hacked cli-decode.c to print something when a new command was installed that had a trailing newline in its help message, and wrote this patch, which removes all the ones I could find this way. (There could still be a few more in *-nat files.)
