d87bef3a7b Update year range in copyright notice of binutils files 
The newer update-copyright.py fixes file encoding too, removing cr/lf
on binutils/bfdtest2.c and ld/testsuite/ld-cygwin/exe-export.exp, and
embedded cr in binutils/testsuite/binutils-all/ar.exp string match.

a2c5833233 Update year range in copyright notice of binutils files 
The result of running etc/update-copyright.py --this-year, fixing all
the files whose mode is changed by the script, plus a build with
--enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes, then checking
out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently.

The copy of cgen was with commit d1dd5fcc38ead reverted as that commit
breaks building of bfp opcodes files.

d86d1fc7f9 Add a -mno-dollar-line-separator command line option to the AVR assembler. 
Some frontends, like the gcc Objective-C frontend, emit symbols with $
characters in them.  The AVR target code in gas treats $ as a line separator,
so the code doesn?t assemble correctly.

Provide a machine-specific option to disable treating $ as a line separator.

	(struct option): Add option -mno-dollar-line-separator.
	(md_parse_option): Adjust treatment of $ when option is present.
	* config/tc-avr.h: Use avr_line_separator_chars.

4bf094292c as_bad_subtract 
Many places report errors of the nature "can't resolve a - b".
This provides a utility function to report such errors consistently.
I removed the section reporting and quotes around symbol names while I
was at it.  Compare
ifunc-2.s:4: Error: can't resolve `bar1' {.text.1 section} - `foo1' {.text.1 section}
with
ifunc-2.s:4: Error: can't resolve bar1 - foo1

In many cases the section names don't help the user very much in
figuring out what went wrong, and the quotes if present arguably ought
to be placed around the entire expression:
can't resolve `bar1 - foo1'

The patch also tidies some tc_get_reloc functions that leak memory on
error paths.

fe0e921f00 PR26513, 629310abec breaks assembling PowerPC Linux kernels 
Inserting with replacement is wrong for some gas hash table uses.
This patch implements an htab_insert that conditionally replaces, and
similarly for str_hash_insert.  str_hash_insert with replace=0 is
roughly equivalent to the older hash_insert, and str_hash_insert with
replace=1 to the older hash_jam, but return values are different.  I
found it useful to know whether the slot was occupied prior to
inserting/replacing.  I've also reinstated the fatal errors on messing
up opcode tables with duplicates.

fd3619828e bfd_section_* macros 
This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various
bfd section macros and functions.  The bfd is hardly ever used and if
needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can
be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind
std_section special sections.  Those sections shouldn't be modified
anyway.

The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros,
replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds
bfd_set_section_lma.  I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where
compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling
bfd_rename_section.  This would have broken bfd_get_section_by_name
and similar functions, but that hardly mattered at such a late stage
in gas processing.

8d1015a887 Move struc-symbol.h to symbols.c 
This file was never supposed to be widely used.  The fact that it has
found its way into many gas files led to bugs, typically when code
expecting a symbolS* to point at a struct symbol is presented with a
struct local_symbol.  Also, commit 158184ac9e changed these structs in
2012 but didn't catch all places where symbol bsym was being used to
test for a local_symbol.

	* Makefile.am (HFILES): Delete struc-symbol.h.
	* doc/internals.texi: Delete struc-symbol.h reference and out
	of date local symbol description.
	* struc-symbol.h: Delete.  Move contents to..
	* symbols.c: ..here.
	(symbol_on_chain, symbol_symbolS): New functions.
	* symbols.h (symbol_on_chain, symbol_symbolS): Declare.

814f1489e9 avr: replace sentinal with iteration from 0 to ARRAY_SIZE 
This seems a little easier to understand than using a sentinal, and will
hopefully let the compiler optimize the loop better.  It also has the effect
that we stop initializing a field of the sentinal that is an enum with zero.

17b9d67d4e make md_parse_option () take a const char * 
This is mostly just adding const in many places, however there are a couple
interesting things.  We need to add casts in tc-s390.c and tc-cris.c because
they have functions that assign to input_line_pointer an argument that
sometimes comes from md_parse_option.  Presumably this is safe because those
targets never pass literals to md_parse_option (), but this code should
probably be improved in the future.  Also xtensa passes the argument to strtoll
which is a rather odd function, it takes a const char * as argument and returns
a pointer into that string as a char * through an out argument, but we can work
around that by adding more variables.

431ff0756a avr: Fix bugs in org/align tracking. 
This commit fixes a few issues in the mechanism for passing information
about ".org" and ".align" directives from the assembler to the linker,
used by the avr target.

In the original commit fdd410ac7a07dfb47dcb992201000582a280d8b2, there
were some mistakes when writing out information about ".align"
directives:
  - An align with fill does not write out its information correctly, the
    fill data overwrites the alignment data.
  - Each alignment directive is recorded at the location where the
    previous alignment directive should be recorded, the first alignment
    directive is discarded.

In commit 137c83d69fad77677cc818593f9399caa777a0c5, the data produced by
objdump is not correct:
   - It's miss-aligned due to a missing whitespace.
   - The fill data for align with fill records is not displayed
     correctly.

All of the above issues are addressed in this commit, and the test is
improved to cover these cases.

fdd410ac7a avr/gas: Write out data to track .org/.align usage. 
Adds support to the assembler to write out data for tracking the use of
.org and .align directives.  This data is collected within the assembler
and written out to a section ".avr.prop" (if there's anything to write
out).

This patch does not add any tests.  The next patch in this series will
add a better mechanism for visualising the contents of .avr.prop which
will make writing tests much easier.

491793b5cb gas/avr: Prevent incorrect overflow errors for diff fixups. 
When fixups are converted to a difference type within md_apply_fix, we
previously left the contents of VALP (the value that was initially
computed within write.c:fixup_segment) unchanged.  This is harmless,
except that this value is used within write.c:fixup_segment once we
return from md_apply_fix to perform an overflow check.

In some cases, the value computed in write.c:fixup_segment is so wrong
that an overflow error can be triggered.  These errors are incorrect.

This patch avoids the overflow errors by adjusting the value in
write.c:fixup_segment using the VALP pointer in md_apply_fix.

A test for this issue is included.

edc9e9a62f AVR: Assembler now prepares for linker relaxation by default. 
Have the assembler prepare for linker relaxation by default.  This
means that users will be able to make use of linker relaxation without
having to adjust the assembler flags, this can make life easier when
compiling libraries.

Having this on by default in the assembler should make no difference to
the assembler code produced, however, some of the debug information will
be slightly less compressed.

A few tests needed to be updated as a result of this change as they
relied on linker relaxation support being off by default.

I've tightened up the definition of which sections can be relaxed on AVR
as part of this commit, the assembler used to think that all
non-debugging sections could be relaxed, when in reality only code
sections can be relaxed for AVR.  The previous definition was not
dangerous, just over cautious.  The new tighter definition allows an
extra test (gas/testsuite/gas/all/forward.d) to continue to pass.

eac7440d80 AVR: Only set link-relax elf flag when appropriate. 
The AVR target uses a bit in the elf header flags to indicate if the
object was assembled ready for linker relaxation.  Previously this flag
was always set, even when the object was not assembled ready for linker
relaxation.

This patch moves setting of the flag into the assembler, and sets it
only when the assembler is preparing the file for linker relaxation.

62ebcb5cbe gas TC_PARSE_CONS_EXPRESSION communication with TC_CONS_FIX_NEW 
A number of targets pass extra information from TC_PARSE_CONS_EXPRESSION
to TC_CONS_FIX_NEW via static variables.  That's OK, but not best
practice.  tc-ppc.c goes further in implementing its own replacement
for cons(), because the generic one doesn't allow relocation modifiers
on constants.  This patch fixes both of these warts.
