The newer update-copyright.py fixes file encoding too, removing cr/lf
on binutils/bfdtest2.c and ld/testsuite/ld-cygwin/exe-export.exp, and
embedded cr in binutils/testsuite/binutils-all/ar.exp string match.
The result of running etc/update-copyright.py --this-year, fixing all
the files whose mode is changed by the script, plus a build with
--enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes, then checking
out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently.
The copy of cgen was with commit d1dd5fcc38ead reverted as that commit
breaks building of bfp opcodes files.
gprof fails to compile on Solaris 10 and 11.3 with --disable-nls:

This is a known issue already partially fixed in binutils/sysdep.h. For
gprof, the same fix needs to be applied in bfd/sysdep.h, as the
following patch does. Tested on i386-pc-solaris2.10 and
i386-pc-solaris2.11.

Certain library headers and functions are required by C99. This
removes configure tests for them. The patch also removes AC_ISC_POSIX
and AC_HEADER_DIRENT, which the autoconf manual states are obsolescent.
sys/time.h is no longer tangled up with time.h so it can be handled by
the gprof configure.

A recent BFD change caused a build failure for a Windows->PPC cross:

Best practice is to not mix lseek/read with fseek/fread on the same
underlying file descriptor, as not all stdio implementations will cope.
Since the plugin uses lseek/read while bfd uses fseek/fread this patch
reopens the file for exclusive use by the plugin rather than trying to
restore the file descriptor. That allows the plugin to read the file
after plugin_call_claim_file too.

binutils has lacked proper pluralization of output messages for a long
time, for example, readelf will display information about a section
that "contains 1 entries" or "There are 1 section headers". Fixing
this properly requires us to use ngettext, because other languages
have different rules to English.
This patch defines macros for ngettext and friends to handle builds
with --disable-nls, and tidies the existing nls support. I've
redefined gettext rather than just defining "_" as dgettext in bfd and
opcodes in case someone wants to use gettext there (which might
conceivably happen with generated code).

The current hard coded limit of open files in bfd/cache.c is 10. This
is pretty low these days. Binaries are often linked against much more
than 10 files (and sometimes against more than 100 shared libraries).
When debugging with GDB some files are opened and closed multiple
times because of this low limit. If possible make the BFD cache file
limit depend on the actual open file limit of the process so more BFD
files can be open at the same time.
