6f7664a9c3 gdb: Convert la_name and la_natural_name to methods
Convert the two language_data member variables la_name and
la_natural_name to virtual methods in language_defn struct called name
and natural_name respectively.

The virtual methods in the language_defn base class are pure virtual,
as every language must implement these, and as every language has a
unique name there's no sensible default here.

Given that every language must implement these methods I did wonder
about making this data passed into the base class constructor, but in
the end I went with the virtual method approach. I'm open to changing
this approach if people prefer the constructor approach.

During updating the calls to language_defn::name I found in
add_set_language_command a place where we took la_name and then
capitalised the first letter to create a language name that could be
used in the documentation string. I replaced this with a use of
natural_name instead as this seemed a better choice, in most cases
this will make no difference, as for most languages the natural_name
is just the name with the first character in upper case, but for some
languages, for example 'Open-CL' and 'Objective-C' this is not the
case.

In the case of asm_language the name is 'asm', while the natural_name
was previously 'assembly'. I changed the natural name to 'Assembly',
this makes the documentation string case above cleaner, however, this
will change the MI output for -var-info-expression, where the 'lang'
field will change from 'assembly' to 'Assembly'. It is possible this
could be a breaking change if a front-end is relying on the existing
name.

04902b0995 Rewrite enum_flags, add unit tests, fix problems
This patch started by adding comprehensive unit tests for enum_flags.

For the testing part, it adds:

 - tests of normal expected uses of the API.

 - checks that _invalid_ uses of the API would fail to compile. I.e.,
   it validates that enum_flags really is a strong type, and that
   incorrect mixing of enum types would be caught at compile time. It
   pulls that off making use of SFINEA and C++11's decltype/constexpr.

This revealed many holes in the enum_flags API. For example, the f1
assignment below currently incorrectly fails to compile:

 enum_flags<flags> f1 = FLAG1;
 enum_flags<flags> f2 = FLAG2 | f1;

The unit tests also revealed that this useful use case doesn't work:

    enum flag { FLAG1 = 1, FLAG2 = 2 };
    enum_flags<flag> src = FLAG1;
    enum_flags<flag> f1 = condition ? src : FLAG2;

It fails to compile because enum_flags<flag> and flag are convertible
to each other.

Turns out that making enum_flags be implicitly convertible to the
backing raw enum type was not a good idea.

If we make it convertible to the underlying type instead, we fix that
ternary operator use case, and, we find cases throughout the codebase
that should be using the enum_flags but were using the raw backing
enum instead. So it's a good change overall.

Also, several operators were missing.

These holes and more are plugged by this patch, by reworking how the
enum_flags operators are implemented, and making use of C++11's
feature of being able to delete methods/functions.

There are cases in gdb/compile/ where we need to call a function in a
C plugin API that expects the raw enum. To address cases like that,
this adds a "raw()" method to enum_flags. This way we can keep using
the safer enum_flags to construct the value, and then be explicit when
we need to get at the raw enum.

This makes most of the enum_flags operators constexpr. Beyond
enabling more compiler optimizations and enabling the new unit tests,
this has other advantages, like making it possible to use operator|
with enum_flags values in switch cases, where only compile-time
constants are allowed:

    enum_flags<flags> f = FLAG1 | FLAG2;
    switch (f)
      {
      case FLAG1 | FLAG2:
	break;
      }

Currently that fails to compile.

It also switches to a different mechanism of enabling the global
operators. The current mechanism isn't namespace friendly, the new
one is.

It also switches to C++11-style SFINAE -- instead of wrapping the
return type in a SFINAE-friently structure, we use an unnamed template
parameter.  I.e., this:

  template <typename enum_type,
	    typename = is_enum_flags_enum_type_t<enum_type>>
  enum_type
  operator& (enum_type e1, enum_type e2)

instead of:

  template <typename enum_type>
  typename enum_flags_type<enum_type>::type
  operator& (enum_type e1, enum_type e2)

Note that the static_assert inside operator~() was converted to a
couple overloads (signed vs unsigned), because static_assert is too
late for SFINAE-based tests, which is important for the CHECK_VALID
unit tests.

Tested with gcc {4.8, 7.1, 9.3} and clang {5.0.2, 10.0.0}.

gdb/ChangeLog:

	* Makefile.in (SELFTESTS_SRCS): Add
	unittests/enum-flags-selftests.c.

8e25bafe93 gdb: Convert language la_get_compile_instance field to a method

4b167ea1a0 Remove dwarf2_per_cu_data::text_offset
This method simply returns the text offset of the objfile associated to
the dwarf2_per_cu_data object. Since dwarf2_per_cu_data objects are
going to become objfile-independent, we can't keep this method. This
patch removes it.

Existing callers need to figure out the in the context of which objfile
this is being used, and call text_offset on it. Typically, this comes
from a symbol baton, where we store the corresponding
dwarf2_per_objfile.

ceacbf6edf gdb: remove TYPE_FIELD macro
Replace all uses of it by type::field.

Note that since type::field returns a reference to the field, some spots
are used to assign the whole field structure. See ctfread.c, function
attach_fields_to_type, for example. This is the same as was happening
with the macro, so I don't think it's a problem, but if anybody sees a
really nicer way to do this, now could be a good time to implement it.

This patch attempts to fix the problem. It arranges to store the
linkage name on the symbol if it exists, and it changes the DWARF
reader so that the demangled name is no longer (usually) stored in the
symbol's "linkage name" field.

c-linkage-name.exp needed a tweak, because it started working
correctly. This conforms to what I think ought to happen, so this
seems like an improvement here.

compile-object-load.c needed a small change to use
symbol_matches_search_name rather than directly examining the linkage
name. Looking directly at the name does the wrong thing for C++.

There is still some name-related confusion in the DWARF reader:

* "physname" often refers to the logical name and not what I would
  consider to be the "physical" name;

* dwarf2_full_name, dwarf2_name, and dwarf2_physname all exist and
  return different strings -- but this seems like at least one name
  too many. For example, Fortran requires dwarf2_full_name, but other
  languages do not.

* To my surprise, dwarf2_physname prefers the form emitted by the
  demangler over the one that it computes. This seems backward to me,
  given that the partial symbol reader prefers the opposite, and it
  seems to me that this choice may perform better as well.

I didn't attempt to clean up these things. It would be good to do,
but whenever I contemplate it I get caught up in dreams of truly
rewriting the DWARF reader instead.

33aa3c10f6 Fix error message in compile-object-load.c
I noticed that an error message in compile-object-load.c mentions the
wrong symbol name. The loop just above the error is looking for
COMPILE_I_EXPR_VAL, but the error references COMPILE_I_EXPR_PTR_TYPE.

I'm checking this in as obvious.  I don't have a test case -- I
noticed it because another patch I'm working on caused this error to
be thrown, but that was due to regression in my patch.

6c2659886f gdb: add back declarations for _initialize functions
I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning. However, it
warns for every _initialize function, for example:

      CXX    dcache.o
    /home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c: In function ‘void _initialize_dcache()’:
    /home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c:688:1: error: no previous declaration for ‘void _initialize_dcache()’ [-Werror=missing-declarations]
     _initialize_dcache (void)
     ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The only practical way forward I found is to add back the declarations,
which were removed by this commit:

    commit 481695ed5f
    Author: John Baldwin <jhb@FreeBSD.org>
    Date:   Sat Sep 9 11:02:37 2017 -0700

        Remove unnecessary function prototypes.

I don't think it's a big problem to have the declarations for these
functions, but if anybody has a better solution for this, I'll be happy
to use it.

268e4f0914 Make the objfile destructor private
The idea behind this is that, in the long run, some code will need to
be able to hold onto an objfile after it is unlinked from the program
space. In particular, this is needed for some functionality to be
moved to worker threads -- otherwise the objfile can be deleted while
still in use.

So, this makes ~objfile private, replacing it with an "unlink" method,
making it more obvious which operation is intended at the calling
points.

953cff5630 Change gcc_target_options to return std::string
This patch was inspired by a recent review that recommended using
std::string in a new implementation of the gcc_target_options gdbarch
function. It changes this function to return std::string rather than
an ordinary xmalloc'd string.

I believe this caught a latent memory leak in compile.c:get_args.

Tested on x86-64 Fedora 29.

fd3619828e bfd_section_* macros
This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various
bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if
needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can
be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind
std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified
anyway.

The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros,
replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds
bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where
compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling
bfd_rename_section. This would have broken bfd_get_section_by_name
and similar functions, but that hardly mattered at such a late stage
in gas processing.

2d41fa1165 Move gdb-dlfcn.[ch] to gdbsupport/
I need to use 'gdb_dlopen' inside 'gdbsupport/', but it's not yet
supported there. This commit moves 'gdb-dlfcn.[ch]' to 'gdbsupport/',
which makes it available also on gdbserver.

gdb/ChangeLog:
2019-08-23  Sergio Durigan Junior  <sergiodj@redhat.com>

	* configure.ac: Don't check for 'dlfcn.h' (moved to
	gdbsupport/common.m4).
	* Makefile.in (COMMON_SFILES): Move 'gdb-dlfcn.c' to
	'gdbsupport/'.
	(HFILES_NO_SRCDIR): Likewise, for 'gdb-dlfcn.h'.
	* compile/compile-c-support.c: Include
	'gdbsupport/gdb-dlfcn.h'.
	* gdbsupport/common.m4: Check for 'dlfcn.h'.

	* gdbsupport/gdb-dlfcn.c: ... here.
	* gdb-dlfcn.h: Move to...
	* gdbsupport/gdb-dlfcn.h: ... here.

gdb/gdbserver/ChangeLog:

590042fc45 Make first and last lines of 'command help documentation' consistent.
With this patch, the help docs now respect 2 invariants:
  * The first line of a command help is terminated by a '.' character.
  * The last character of a command help is not a newline character.

Note that the changes for the last invariant were done by Tom, as part of :
 [PATCH] Remove trailing newlines from help text
 https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2019-06/msg00050.html
but some occurrences have been re-introduced since then.

Some help docs had to be rephrased/restructured to respect the above
invariants.

Before this patch, print_doc_line was printing the first line
of a command help documentation, but stopping at the first '.'
or ',' character.

This was giving inconsistent results :
  * The first line of command helps was sometimes '.' terminated,
    sometimes not.
  * The first line of command helps was not always designed to be
    readable/understandable/unambiguous when stopping at the first
    '.' or ',' character.

This e.g. created the following inconsistencies/problems:
< catch exception -- Catch Ada exceptions
< catch handlers -- Catch Ada exceptions
< catch syscall -- Catch system calls by their names
< down-silently -- Same as the `down' command
while the new help is:
> catch exception -- Catch Ada exceptions, when raised.
> catch handlers -- Catch Ada exceptions, when handled.
> catch syscall -- Catch system calls by their names, groups and/or numbers.
> down-silently -- Same as the `down' command, but does not print anything.

Also, the command help doc should not be terminated by a newline
character, but this was not respected by all commands.
The cli-option -OPT framework re-introduced some occurences.
So, the -OPT build help framework was changed to not output newlines at the
end of %OPTIONS% replacement.

This patch changes the help documentations to ensure the 2 invariants
given above.

It implied to slightly rephrase or restructure some help docs.

Based on the above invariants, print_doc_line (called by
'apropos' and 'help' commands to print the first line of a command
help) now outputs the full first line of a command help.

This all results in a lot of small changes in the produced help docs.
There are less code changes than changes in the help docs, as a lot
of docs are produced by some code (e.g. the remote packet usage settings).

8abfcabcb4 Use _() in calls to build_help
Currently some code in gdb uses build_help with N_(), like:

  static const std::string compile_print_help
    = gdb::option::build_help (N_("\

I believe this is incorrect. The N_ macro is used to mark text that
should end up in the message catalog, but which will be translated by
a later call to gettext.

However, in this case, there is no later call to gettext, so (if gdb
had translations), this text would remain untranslated.

Instead, I think using the ordinary _() macro is correct here.
Translators will have to know to preserve "%OPTIONS%" in the text --
but that seems both unavoidable and fine.

Tested by rebuilding as there's not much else to do.

I touched symtab.h and was surprised to see how many files were
rebuilt. I looked into it a bit, and found that defs.h includes
gdbarch.h, which in turn includes many things.

gdbarch.h is only needed by a minority ofthe files in gdb, so this
patch removes the include from defs.h and updates the fallout.

I did "wc -l" on the files in build/gdb/.deps; this patch reduces the
line count from 139935 to 137030; so there are definitely future
build-time savings here.

Note that while I configured with --enable-targets=all, it's possible
that some *-nat.c file needs an update. I could not test all of
these. The buildbot caught a few problems along these lines.

268a13a5a3 Rename common to gdbsupport
This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the
top level.

This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do
this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then
move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit
more tractable.

I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this
patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too
much difficulty.

Tested by the buildbot.

66eb1ed388 Fix gdb build with -std=gnu++11
The options framework series broken the build with gcc 4.8, or any
other compiler were we end up forcing -std=gnu++11, causing errors
like these:

 ../../binutils-gdb/gdb/compile/compile.c: In function gdb::option::option_def_group make_compile_options_def_group(compile_options*):
 ../../binutils-gdb/gdb/compile/compile.c:266:44: error: could not convert (const gdb::option::option_def*)(& compile_command_option_defs) from const gdb::option::option_def* to gdb::array_view<const gdb::option::option_def>
    return {compile_command_option_defs, opts};
					     ^
   CXX    copying.o
 ../../binutils-gdb/gdb/compile/compile.c:267:1: error: control reaches end of non-void function [-Werror=return-type]
  }
  ^

This is a C++11 vs C++14 difference -- C++14 relaxed the rules for
eliding braces.

This commit fixes it by adding the missing (in C++11) braces. Tested
with g++ 4.8.

gdb/ChangeLog:

	* compile/compile.c (make_compile_options_def_group): Add braces
	around array_view initializer.
	* thread.c (make_thread_apply_all_options_def_group)
	(make_thread_apply_all_options_def_group): Likewise.

e6ed716cd5 Migrate rest of compile commands to new options framework
As I was in the neighbourhood, I converted the other "compile"
subcommands to the new options framework too. Specifically, "compile
code" and "compile file".

The user-visible changes are:

  - All abbreviations of "-raw" are accepted now, instead of just -r.
    Obviously that means "-ra" is now accepted.

  - Option completion now works.

  - "compile file" did not have a completer yet, and now it knows to
    complete on filenames.

  - You couldn't use "compile file" with a file named "-something".
    You can now, with "compile file -- -something".

gdb/ChangeLog:
2019-06-13  Pedro Alves  <palves@redhat.com>

	* compile/compile.c (struct compile_options): New.
	(compile_flag_option_def, compile_command_option_defs)
	(make_compile_options_def_group): New.
	(compile_file_command): Handle options with
	gdb::option::process_options.
	(compile_file_command_completer): New function.
	(compile_code_command): Handle options with
	gdb::option::process_options.
	(compile_code_command_completer): New function.
	(_initialize_compiler): Install completers for "compile code" and
	"compile file". Mention available options in "compile code" and
	"compile code"'s help.
	* completer.c (advance_to_completion_word): New, factored out from
	...
	(advance_to_expression_complete_word_point): ... this.
	(advance_to_filename_complete_word_point): New.
	* completer.h (advance_to_filename_complete_word_point): New
	declaration.

gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog:
2019-06-13  Pedro Alves  <palves@redhat.com>

	* gdb.compile/compile.exp: Adjust expected output to option
	processing changes.

7d8062de98 Make "print" and "compile print" support -OPT options
This patch adds support for "print -option optval --", etc.
Likewise for "compile print".

We'll get:

~~~~~~
(gdb) help print
Print value of expression EXP.
Usage: print [[OPTION]... --] [/FMT] [EXP]
Options:
  -address [on|off]
    Set printing of addresses.
  -array [on|off]
    Set pretty formatting of arrays.
  -array-indexes [on|off]
    Set printing of array indexes.
  -elements NUMBER|unlimited
    Set limit on string chars or array elements to print.
    "unlimited" causes there to be no limit.
  -max-depth NUMBER|unlimited
    Set maximum print depth for nested structures, unions and arrays.
    When structures, unions, or arrays are nested beyond this depth then they
    will be replaced with either '{...}' or '(...)' depending on the language.
    Use "unlimited" to print the complete structure.
  -null-stop [on|off]
    Set printing of char arrays to stop at first null char.
  -object [on|off]
    Set printing of C++ virtual function tables.
  -pretty [on|off]
    Set pretty formatting of structures.
  -repeats NUMBER|unlimited
    Set threshold for repeated print elements.
    "unlimited" causes all elements to be individually printed.
  -static-members [on|off]
    Set printing of C++ static members.
  -symbol [on|off]
    Set printing of symbol names when printing pointers.
  -union [on|off]
    Set printing of unions interior to structures.
  -vtbl [on|off]
    Set printing of C++ virtual function tables.
Note: because this command accepts arbitrary expressions, if you
specify any command option, you must use a double dash ("--")
to mark the end of option processing.  E.g.: "print -o -- myobj".
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I want to highlight the comment above about "--".

At first, I thought we could make the print command parse the options,
and if the option wasn't recognized, fallback to parsing as an
expression. Then, if the user wanted to disambiguate, he'd use the
"--" option delimiter. For example, if you had a variable called
"object" and you wanted to print its negative, you'd have to do:

  (gdb) print -- -object

After getting that working, I saw that gdb.pascal/floats.exp
regressed, in these tests:

 gdb_test "print -r" " = -1\\.2(499.*|5|500.*)"
 gdb_test "print -(r)" " = -1.2(499.*|5|500.*)"
 gdb_test "print -(r + s)" " = -3\\.4(499.*|5|500.*)"

It's the first one that I found most concerning. It regressed because
"-r" is the abbreviation of "-raw". I realized then that the behavior
change was a bit risker than I'd like, considering scripts, wrappers
around gdb, etc., and even user expectation. So instead, I made the
print command _require_ the "--" options delimiter if you want to
specify any option.  So:

  (gdb) print -r

is parsed as an expression, and

  (gdb) print -r --

is parsed as an option.

I noticed that that's also what lldb's expr (the equivalent of print)
does to handle the same problem.

Going back the options themselves, note that:

 - you can shorten option names, as long as unambiguous.
 - For boolean options, 0/1 stand for off/on.
 - For boolean options, "true" is implied.

So these are all equivalent:

 (gdb) print -object on -static-members off -pretty on -- foo
 (gdb) print -object -static-members off -pretty -- foo
 (gdb) print -object -static-members 0 -pretty -- foo
 (gdb) print -o -st 0 -p -- foo

TAB completion is fully supported:

  (gdb) p -[TAB]
  -address         -elements        -pretty          -symbol
  -array           -null-stop       -repeats         -union
  -array-indexes   -object          -static-members  -vtbl

Note that the code is organized such that some of the options and the
"set/show" commands code is shared. In particular, the "print"
options and the corresponding "set print" commands are defined with
the same structures. The commands are installed with the
gdb::option::add_setshow_cmds_for_options function.

b02f78f928 Introduce and use make_unique_xstrdup
Adds an utility function to make it shorter to write the common case
of wrapping an xstrdup with a unique_xmalloc_ptr, and uses it
throughout.

Note: I tried to put this in common/common-utils.h near skip_spaces,
etc. but that is included in common/common-defs.h before
common/gdb_unique_ptr.h is included, so it would fail to compile
because gdb::unique_xmalloc_ptr isn't defined at that point yet. I
tried moving the gdb_unique_ptr.h inclusion before common-utils.h, but
that doesn't work because gdb_unique_ptr.h depends on common-utils.h
for xfree.

eedc3f4f0a Replace throw_exception with throw in some cases
This replaces throw_exception with "throw;" when possible. This was
written by script. The rule that is followed is that uses of the
form:

   catch (... &name)
     {
       ...
       throw_exception (name);
     }

... can be rewritten. This should always be safe, because exceptions
are caught by const reference, and therefore can't be modified in the
body of the catch.

230d2906b9 Rename gdb exception types
This renames the gdb exception types. The old types were only needed
due to the macros in common-exception.h that are now gone.

The intermediate layer of gdb_exception_RETURN_MASK_ALL did not seem
needed, so this patch removes it entirely.
