862f0945fb Relax gdb.compile/compile.exp to match the address printed for frame
One test in gdb.compile/compile.exp passes on one fedora builder,

 bt
 #0  0x00007ffff7ff43f6 in _gdb_expr (__regs=0x7ffff7ff2000) at gdb
 command line:1^M
 #1  <function called from gdb>^M
 #2  main () at /home/gdb-buildbot/fedora-x86-64-1/fedora-x86-64/build/gdb/testsuite/../../../binutils-gdb/gdb/testsuite/gdb.compile/compile.c:106^M
 (gdb) PASS: gdb.compile/compile.exp: bt

but fails on my machine with gcc trunk,

 bt^M
 #0  _gdb_expr (__regs=0x7ffff7ff3000) at gdb command line:1^M
 #1  <function called from gdb>^M
 #2  main () at gdb/testsuite/gdb.compile/compile.c:106^M
 (gdb) FAIL: gdb.compile/compile.exp: bt

The test should be tweaked to match both cases (pc in the start of line
vs pc in the middle of line). Note that I am not clear that why libcc1
emits debug info this way so that the address is in the middle of line.

	* gdb.compile/compile.exp: Match the address printed for
	frame in the output of command "bt".

46a4882b3c Stop assuming no-debug-info variables have type int
An earlier commit made GDB no longer assume no-debug-info functions
return int. This commit gives the same treatment to variables.

Currently, you can end misled by GDB over output like this:

  (gdb) p var
  $1 = -1
  (gdb) p /x var
  $2 = 0xffffffff

until you realize that GDB is assuming that the variable is an "int",
because:

  (gdb) ptype var
  type = <data variable, no debug info>

You may try to fix it by casting, but that doesn't really help:

  (gdb) p /x (unsigned long long) var
  $3 = 0xffffffffffffffff            # incorrect
         ^^

That's incorrect output, because the variable was defined like this:

  uint64_t var = 0x7fffffffffffffff;
                   ^^

What happened is that with the cast, GDB did an int -> 'unsigned long
long' conversion instead of reinterpreting the variable as the cast-to
type. To get at the variable properly you have to reinterpret the
variable's address manually instead, with either:

  (gdb) p /x *(unsigned long long *) &var
  $4 = 0x7fffffffffffffff
  (gdb) p /x {unsigned long long} &var
  $5 = 0x7fffffffffffffff

After this commit GDB does it for you. This is what you'll get
instead:

  (gdb) p var
  'var' has unknown type; cast it to its declared type
  (gdb) p /x (unsigned long long) var
  $1 = 0x7fffffffffffffff

As in the functions patch, the "compile" machinery doesn't currently
have the cast-to type handy, so it continues assuming no-debug
variables have int type, though now at least it warns.

The change to gdb.cp/m-static.exp deserves an explanation:

 - gdb_test "print 'gnu_obj_1::method()::sintvar'" "\\$\[0-9\]+ = 4" \
 + gdb_test "print (int) 'gnu_obj_1::method()::sintvar'" "\\$\[0-9\]+ = 4" \

That's printing the "sintvar" function local static of the
"gnu_obj_1::method()" method.

The problem with that test is that that "'S::method()::static_var'"
syntax doesn't really work in C++ as you'd expect. The way to make it
work correctly currently is to quote the method part, not the whole
expression, like:

  (gdb) print 'gnu_obj_1::method()'::sintvar

If you wrap the whole expression in quotes, like in m-static.exp, what
really happens is that the parser considers the whole string as a
symbol name, but there's no debug symbol with that name. However,
local statics have linkage and are given a mangled name that demangles
to the same string as the full expression, so that's what GDB prints.
After this commit, and without the cast, the print in m-static.exp
would error out saying that the variable has unknown type:

  (gdb) p 'gnu_obj_1::method()::sintvar'
  'gnu_obj_1::method()::sintvar' has unknown type; cast it to its declared type

TBC, if currently (even before this series) you try to print any
function local static variable of type other than int, you'll get
bogus results. You can see that with m-static.cc as is, even.
Printing the "svar" local, which is a boolean (1 byte) still prints as
"int" (4 bytes):

  (gdb) p 'gnu_obj_1::method()::svar'
  $1 = 1
  (gdb) ptype 'gnu_obj_1::method()::svar'
  type = <data variable, no debug info>

This probably prints some random bogus value on big endian machines.

If 'svar' was of some aggregate type (etc.) we'd still print it as
int, so the problem would have been more obvious... After this
commit, you'll get instead:

  (gdb) p 'gnu_obj_1::method()::svar'
  'gnu_obj_1::method()::svar' has unknown type; cast it to its declared type

... so at least GDB is no longer misleading. Making GDB find the real
local static debug symbol is the subject of the following patches. In
the end, it'll all "Just Work".

7022349d5c Stop assuming no-debug-info functions return int
The fact that GDB defaults to assuming that functions return int, when
it has no debug info for the function has been a recurring source of
user confusion. Recently this came up on the errno pretty printer
discussions. Shortly after, it came up again on IRC, with someone
wondering why does getenv() in GDB return a negative int:

  (gdb) p getenv("PATH")
  $1 = -6185

This question (with s/getenv/random-other-C-runtime-function) is a FAQ
on IRC.

The reason for the above is:

 (gdb) p getenv
 $2 = {<text variable, no debug info>} 0x7ffff7751d80 <getenv>
 (gdb) ptype getenv
 type = int ()

... which means that GDB truncated the 64-bit pointer that is actually
returned from getent to 32-bit, and then sign-extended it:

 (gdb) p /x -6185
 $6 = 0xffffe7d7

The workaround is to cast the function to the right type, like:

 (gdb) p ((char *(*) (const char *)) getenv) ("PATH")
 $3 = 0x7fffffffe7d7 "/usr/local/bin:/"...

IMO, we should do better than this.

I see the "assume-int" issue the same way I see printing bogus values
for optimized-out variables instead of "<optimized out>" -- I'd much
rather that the debugger tells me "I don't know" and tells me how to
fix it than showing me bogus misleading results, making me go around
tilting at windmills.

If GDB prints a signed integer when you're expecting a pointer or
aggregate, you at least have some sense that something is off, but
consider the case of the function actually returning a 64-bit integer.
For example, compile this without debug info:

 unsigned long long
 function ()
 {
   return 0x7fffffffffffffff;
 }

Currently, with pristine GDB, you get:

 (gdb) p function ()
 $1 = -1                      # incorrect
 (gdb) p /x function ()
 $2 = 0xffffffff              # incorrect

maybe after spending a few hours debugging you suspect something is
wrong with that -1, and do:

 (gdb) ptype function
 type = int ()

and maybe, just maybe, you realize that the function actually returns
unsigned long long. And you try to fix it with:

(gdb) p /x (unsigned long long) function ()
 $3 = 0xffffffffffffffff      # incorrect

... which still produces the wrong result, because GDB simply applied
int to unsigned long long conversion. Meaning, it sign-extended the
integer that it extracted from the return of the function, to 64-bits.

and then maybe, after asking around on IRC, you realize you have to
cast the function to a pointer of the right type, and call that. It
won't be easy, but after a few missteps, you'll get to it:

.....  (gdb) p /x ((unsigned long long(*) ()) function) ()
 $666 = 0x7fffffffffffffff             # finally! :-)

So to improve on the user experience, this patch does the following
(interrelated) things:

 - makes no-debug-info functions no longer default to "int" as return
   type. Instead, they're left with NULL/"<unknown return type>"
   return type.

    (gdb) ptype getenv
    type = <unknown return type> ()

 - makes calling a function with unknown return type an error.

    (gdb) p getenv ("PATH")
    'getenv' has unknown return type; cast the call to its declared return type

 - and then to make it easier to call the function, makes it possible
   to _only_ cast the return of the function to the right type,
   instead of having to cast the function to a function pointer:

    (gdb) p (char *) getenv ("PATH") # now Just Works
    $3 = 0x7fffffffe7d7 "/usr/local/bin:/"...

    (gdb) p ((char *(*) (const char *)) getenv) ("PATH") # continues working
    $4 = 0x7fffffffe7d7 "/usr/local/bin:/"...

   I.e., it makes GDB default the function's return type to the type
   of the cast, and the function's parameters to the type of the
   arguments passed down.

After this patch, here's what you'll get for the "unsigned long long"
example above:

 (gdb) p function ()
 'function' has unknown return type; cast the call to its declared return type
 (gdb) p /x (unsigned long long) function ()
 $4 = 0x7fffffffffffffff     # correct!

Note that while with "print" GDB shows the name of the function that
has the problem:

  (gdb) p getenv ("PATH")
  'getenv' has unknown return type; cast the call to its declared return type

which can by handy in more complicated expressions, "ptype" does not:

  (gdb) ptype getenv ("PATH")
  function has unknown return type; cast the call to its declared return type

This will be fixed in the next patch.

bc6c7af4a2 Fix test names starting with uppercase output by basic functions
The following patch is based on the previous patch i sent and handles cases of
test names that start with an uppercase letter. Test names should start with
lowercase unless it starts with the name of a technology, architecture, ISA
etc.

This first patch addresses cases of test names output explicitly via xfail,
kfail, kpass, fail, pass, unsupported, untested and also names set with the
pattern "set test" and "set testname".

9c37b5aed9 Remove Java support
This patch removes the Java support from gdb. gcj has not seen much
development or use for years now, and was recently removed from GCC.
This patch changes gdb to follow; in the unlikely event that there are
still users using gcj, they can continue to use an older gdb to debug.
Or, they can debug in C++ mode.

Built and regtested on x86-64 Fedora 24.

9553661a5f Fix gdb.compile/compile.exp shlib regression
Commit 6e774b13c3b8 (Make ftrace tests work with remote targets) made
a few gdb.compile/compile.exp tests disappear:

 -PASS: gdb.compile/compile.exp: call shared library function
 -PASS: gdb.compile/compile.exp: expect 1
 -PASS: gdb.compile/compile.exp: modify shared library variable
 -PASS: gdb.compile/compile.exp: expect 15

This is because the test uses ldflags instead of using the shlib
option, so it misses linking with -rpath, resulting in:

 (gdb) run
 Starting program: .../compile/compile-shlib
 .../compile/compile-shlib: error while loading shared libraries: compile-shlib.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
 [Inferior 1 (process 18014) exited with code 0177]

We were missing a gdb_load_shlibs call, which is needed for remote
testing.

	* gdb.compile/compile.exp: Use gdb_compile with "shlib=" option
	instead of build_executable.  Use gdb_load_shlibs.

2151ccc56c Always organize test artifacts in a directory hierarchy
When running tests in parallel, each test puts its generated files in a
different directory, under "outputs". I think it would be nice if it
was always the case, as it would isolate the test cases a bit more. An
artifact created by a test wouldn't get overwritten by another test.

Also, it makes it easier to clean up. A lot of executables are left all
over the place because their names do not appear in gdb.*/Makefile. If
everything is in "outputs", then we just have to delete that directory
(which we already do).

At the same time it makes the gdb.foo directories and their Makefiles
useless in the build directory, since they are pretty much only used for
cleaning.

What do you think?

8ce7415353 Force language to C in gdb.compile/compile-ifunc.exp
Due to the lack of debug information in the binary, GDB is unable to figure
out what language is being used. This may be a problem when doing remote
debugging and the binary stops at the entry point containing asm code.

In this case GDB will switch to asm as current language and will not switch
back to C when it reaches main, which in turn causes the compile feature check
to malfunction.

This is solved by forcing the language to C after reaching main.

084641963d compile: Warn for old GCC on cv-qualified self-reference
GDB could:

compile code struct_object.selffield = &struct_object
./compile/compile-c-types.c:83: internal-error: insert_type: Assertion `add == NULL || add->gcc_type == gcc_type' failed.
A problem internal to GDB has been detected,
further debugging may prove unreliable.
Quit this debugging session? (y or n) FAIL: gdb.compile/compile.exp: compile code struct_object.selffield = &struct_object (GDB internal
error)

The bug was not in GDB but in the GCC part interfacing with GDB.

Alexandre Oliva has fixed it the right way:
	https://gcc.gnu.org/git/gitweb.cgi?p=gcc.git;a=commitdiff;h=072dfdba0ea62abb65514cb3a90cdf3868efe286
	git://gcc.gnu.org/git/gcc.git
	aoliva/libcp1

Attaching this GDB testsuite update + info to user s/he should upgrade GCC.
After Alex upstreams the fix I can update the message to contain the specific
GCC release.

7f36105668 compile: Use also inferior munmap
Currently inferior memory is allocated by inferior mmap() but it is never
deallocated; despite the injected objfile incl. its symbols is freed. This was
intentional so that one can do for example:
inferior:
	char *str = "foo";
GDB:
	(gdb) compile code str = "bar";

I believe later patches will be needed to introduce full control over keeping
vs. discarding the injected module as being discussed in:
	compile: objfiles lifetime UI
	https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb/2015-04/msg00051.html
	Message-ID: <20150429135735.GA16974@host1.jankratochvil.net>
	https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb/2015-05/msg00007.html

As decided by Phil it is better not to leak inferior pages as users can
workaround the issue above for example by:
	(gdb) compile code str = strdup ("bar");

I have checked that in fact gdb/doc/ (written by Phil) already expects the
injected code will be unmapped so that does not need to be changed:
	compile code int ff = 5; p = &ff;
	In this example, @code{p} would point to @code{ff} when the
	@code{compile} command is executing the source code provided to it.
	However, as variables in the (example) program persist with their
	assigned values, the variable @code{p} would point to an invalid
	location when the command exists.

36de76f9cc compile: New 'compile print'
It is planned the existing GDB command 'print' will be able to evaluate its
expressions using the compiler. There will be some option to choose between
the existing GDB evaluation and the compiler evaluation. But as an
intermediate step this patch provides the expression printing feature as a new
command.

I can imagine it could be also called 'maintenance compile print' as in the
future one should be able to use its functionality by the normal 'print'
command.

There was a discussion with Eli about the command name:
	https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2015-03/msg00880.html
As there were no other comments yet I haven't renamed it yet, before there is
some confirmation about settlement on the final name.

3a9558c494 compile: Use -Wall, not -w
For a reason unknown to me GDB was using -w instead of -Wall for 'compile code'.
The problem is later patch for 'compile printf' really needs some warnings to
be able to catch for example missing format string parameters:
	(gdb) compile printf "%d\n"
GCC does not seem to be able to cancel -w (there is nothing like -no-w).

Besides that I think even 'compile code' can benefit from -Wall.

That #ifndef change in print_one_macro() is needed otherwise we get
macro-redefinition warnings for the GCC built-in macros (as -w is no
longer in effect). For example, without the #ifndef/#endif one gets:

	compile -r -- void _gdb_expr(){int i = 5;}^M
	/tmp/gdbobj-xpU1yB/out4.c:4:0: warning: "__FILE__" redefined [-Wbuiltin-macro-redefined]^M
	/tmp/gdbobj-xpU1yB/out4.c:5:0: warning: "__LINE__" redefined^M
	...

It makes more sense to pick the inferior's version of the macros, hence
#ifndef instead of #undef.

That new testsuite XFAIL is there as if one changes the struct definition to be
compliant with cv-qualifiers (to prevent the warnings):
struct struct_type {
-  struct struct_type *selffield;
+  volatile struct struct_type *selffield;

081a1c2ced compile: Fix GNU-IFUNC funcs called from injected code
One could not call IFUNCs (=indirect functions) from the compiled injected
code.  Either it errored with:
	gdb command line:1:1: error: function return type cannot be function

or it just called the IFUNC dispatcher in normal way, returning real function
implementation address instead of the function return value (and thus no
function was called).

4b62a76e0c compile: Fix function pointers
TBH while I always comment reasons for each of the compilation options in
reality I tried them all and chose that combination that needs the most simple
compile/compile-object-load.c (ld.so emulation) implementation.

1bc1068a0c Fix MinGW compilation

cc1: all warnings being treated as errors

In the end I have managed to test it by Wine myself:

$ wine build_win32/gdb/gdb.exe -q build_win32/gdb/gdb.exe -ex start -ex 'compile code 1' -ex 'set confirm no' -ex quit
[...]
Temporary breakpoint 1, main (argc=1, argv=0x241418) at ../../gdb/gdb.c:29
29        args.argc = argc;
Could not load libcc1.so: Module not found.

Even if it managed to load libcc1.so (it needs host-dependent name libcc1.dll)
then it would soon end up at least on:

default_infcall_mmap:
  error (_("This target does not support inferior memory allocation by mmap."));

As currently there is only:

linux-tdep.c:
  set_gdbarch_infcall_mmap (gdbarch, linux_infcall_mmap);

While one could debug Linux targets from MS-Windows host I find it somehow
overcomplicated now when we are trying to get it running at least on native
Linux x86*.

The 'compile' project needs a larger port effort to run on MS-Windows.

bb2ec1b34e the "compile" command
This final patch adds the new "compile" command and subcommands, and
all the machinery needed to make it work.

A shared library supplied by gcc is used for all communications with
gcc. Types and most aspects of symbols are provided directly by gdb
to the compiler using this library.

gdb provides some information about the user's code using plain text.
Macros are emitted this way, and DWARF location expressions (and
bounds for VLA) are compiled to C code.

This hybrid approach was taken because, on the one hand, it is better
to provide global declarations and such on demand; but on the other
hand, for local variables, translating DWARF location expressions to C
was much simpler than exporting a full compiler API to gdb -- the same
result, only easier to implement, understand, and debug.

In the ordinary mode, the user's expression is wrapped in a dummy
function. After compilation, gdb inserts the resulting object code
into the inferior, then calls this function.

Access to local variables is provided by noting which registers are
used by location expressions, and passing a structure of register
values into the function. Writes to registers are supported by
copying out these values after the function returns.

This approach was taken so that we could eventually implement other
more interesting features based on this same infrastructure; for
example, we're planning to investigate inferior-side breakpoint
conditions.
